  • What should I do, if I want to visit your office to see activities?

    You may write an application mentioning (1) Your brief introduction with full contact information (2) Purpose (3) Date & Time of visit (4) Number of persons in a group (5) If you are a foreigner, also attach copies of your Passport and Visa ; Send it by Post/ Fax/Email addressing to the Office of the Survey of India, where you want to visit to see activities. Only after receiving the authentication letter from the concerned office, you may proceed to visit to see activities.

    However, every year on the event of National Science Day i.e. 28 February, Survey of India Offices observes Open House to show its activities to the general public.

  • I know city/village name only, how do I know the OSM Sheet Number?

    This facility will be available in Map Transaction Registry (MTR), which will be launched soon, meanwhile you may write to the National Geo-spatial  Data Centre, Survey of India, Hathibarkala Estate, Dehradun (UK) – 248 001 OR Geographical Information System & Remote Sensing Directorate, Survey of India, Uppal, Hyderabad (AP) – 500 039. 

  • What is the difference between Topo and OSM sheets?

    Both series maps are topographical maps with similar contents. Prior to introduction of National Map Policy 2005 topo sheets were published based on Polyconic projection and Everest datum. But after introduction of National Map Policy 2005, Open Series Map (OSM) sheets are introduced for use of general public, which are based on UTM projection and WGS84 datum.

  • What is the difference between Tourist Map and Guide Map?

    Guide Maps – These are published on scale 1:20,000 in plains and 1:10,000 in hills. These usually show little ground outside the town limits, all routes in and about the town, police stations, civil courts, Collector's office, hospitals, gardens, railway stations, bus stand and air ports etc with various geographical features. These maps can be served as guide for Civil Defence, Town and Country Planning purposes. These are also useful for Central, State and Municipal Governments as well as other local authorities who deal with civil administration. For some specific towns Guide Map can be classified as 'Restricted' as per Ministry of Defence advice.

    Tourist Maps – These are published on scale 1:50,000 for selective cities. These usually show road network, population centres, geographical features along with items of special tourist interest i.e. architectural and historical landmarks, preserves, national parks, museums, hotels, camping sites and tourist centres. These are specially meant for foreign tourists, these serve as advertisements for tourism and as a means to publicize vacation spots, sightseeing landmarks and tourist attractions. Tourist Maps are classified as 'Unrestricted'.

  • I want some area of my interest to be surveyed by SOI experts, what should I do?

    You know that your area falls on which state, city or village, just write your requirement to concerned Regional Geo-spatial Data Centre with full details. Such services can be provided on payment basis subject to availability of resources.

  • I brought the digital data from Survey of India, needs some expert help, whom should I contact?

    There is no provision to provide any expert help outside the Survey of India. However, you may send an email to Survey of India, briefly describing your problem, the helping tips may be communicated to you, if your problem is found under scope.

  • there any procedure to buy a gridded map (DSM) being a civilian?

    Generally, these maps are published for Defence Forces of India. You, on behalf of your organization, may write to the Ministry of Defence, Government of India describing your purpose and seeking permission for procurement of the same alongwith duly filled-in Form O.57 (a). On approval, the same can be provided by Office of the Surveyor General of India, Survey of India, Hathibarkala Estate, Dehradun – 248 001. 

  • I brought a restricted gridded map, which is now of no use/tear off, how can I write-off?

    Whosoever buys such map for some bonafied purpose needs to submit annual safe custody receipt to Survey of India. But when the purpose is served or if map gets tear off, it needs to be write-off. You may write to the Surveyor General of India, Survey of India, Hathibarkala Estate, Dehradun seeking permission to write-off the same, the Office of the Surveyor General of India will guide you further.

  • Can I publish a booklet containing SOI map with superimposes information on it?

    Maps published by Survey of India are under copyright act. You may not publish such booklet without prior verification by Survey of India (Verification charges apply). After verification the permission for publication of such booklets can be granted or denied. You may write to Incharge, Boundary Verification Wing (SGO), MA&DC Campus, Survey of India, Hathibarkala Estate, Dehradun,  who will guide you further.

  • How can I apply for Summer / Winter Internship in SOI office?

    As per policy SOI do not entertain any application being sent by a student directly for Summer/Winter internship.
    Applications forwarded by the Head of Institutions with duly recommendation of the name(s) of their student(s) for Summer/Winter internship on their official letterheads to the Surveyor General of India are considered. No financial matter (i.e. pay or stipend) involves.

  • I have done a professional course conducted at IIS&M (STI), how can I serve in Survey of India?

    Qualifying in the professional courses conducted at IIS&M (STI), Survey of India, Uppal, Hyderabad does not mean that you have right to serve in Survey of India. You can keep looking for advertisement in the National Newspapers as well as Survey of India website, whenever vacancies are advertized, you may apply as per laid down procedure.

  • I know my Survey/Khasra number, how do I trace it on a map published by Survey of India?

    Survey/Khasra Number can not be traced out on maps published by Survey of India. For this purpose you may contact municipality, tehsil or development authority of your district.

  • How should I obtain maps published by Survey of India?

    Maps published by Survey of India are available for sale with authorized maps sale agents in major cities & towns. The same can also be obtained from concerned Geo-spatial Data Centres (GDCs). In addition all the maps can also be procured, in bulk* on discounted rates, from the Map Records & Issue Wing, Map Archive & Dissemination Centre, Survey of India, Hathibarkala Estate, Dehradun – 248 001.

    Detail of maps as desired is to be sent in advance, so that its availability with actual cost, including transportation charges may be communicated to you. For supply of maps a Bank Draft in favour of “Senior Accounts Officer, Central Pay & Account Office, Survey of India, Dehradun (Uttarakhand)”  of 100% advance payment is mandatory.

    *Bulk is termed as one map in large quantity ordered (BUT) Various maps all single copy order will never be treated as bulk.

  • Can I buy online map products of Survey of India with online e-payment through credit card?

    You can place online (by e-mail) order for map products of Survey of India. But as per present policy, Survey of India is not planning to accept online e-payments through credit card. Please follow procedure as described in answer of Q13 above.
